Firefox Keeps Updating the Shit Out of Itself—Is Safari 3 the Answer?
Maybe I’m out of the loop. I’ve been using Firefox for the past few years, but lately it’s just been updating constantly and doing other weird shit that frustrates me. I talked to a few of my nerd friends about the State of Browsers Today. Am I behind the times? Are you?
Ian Meyer, 28, Systems Administrator, Yahoo! Inc./Hip-Hop Partyographer
Meatloafing: any thoughts on all the recent firefox updates? how it keeps updating the shit out of itself
Ian: i don’t use firefox
Meatloafing: do you use safari 3?
Ian: yeah
Meatloafing: so does ben. hmm. but you must use ff sometimes..
Ian: not really. no reason
Meatloafing: ok
Ian: “What’s the point of Firefox when you have Safari 3?”
Meatloafing: ok, noted
Ian: oh wait–safari 3 comes with leopard, so just upgrade.
Meatloafing: rite, i might
Meatloafing: should i? hrm
Ian: no, don’t “might.” do it. it’s 500% worth it. i’ve been using it for awhile now. it’s great.
PLUS: 2 more interviews w/ Ben R. & Adam K.!
Ben R., 31, Graphic Designer
Ben R: i don’t really use firefox, because it’s too slow. the end.
Meatloafing: what do u use
Ben R: i use safari 3. it’s speedy.
Meatloafing: ff has all those developer plugins that are nice
Ben R: yes, i like some of those. i like the firebug plugin
Meatloafing: so you use both, but mostly safari 3
Ben R: correct.
Meatloafing: what about netscape?
Ben R: mostly netscape 3. netscape now!
Ben R: don’t get me wrong, i like firefox, and i like the idea of it. i just want it to be a better product. meanwhile, apple has stepped up with safari 3, which is a great product. it renders pretty nicely. i may give firefox a slight edge there. but it’s fast as hell
Meatloafing: rite. i must admit i have not used it much
Meatloafing: is that what’s on my new imac?
Ben R: no. it comes with leopard, and you can also download it from apple.com
Meatloafing: i want leopard
Ben R: 3 has a few new bells and whistles, such as warning you when you’re closing a window with multiple tabs. i realize FF has done that for a while, but it’s nice to see
Meatloafing: oh. yeah, i would die w/out that
Meatloafing: thank you for your time
Ben R: thanks for having me, mollie. and thanks to all the meatloafing readers.
Adam K., 33, Managing Editor, Slice
Adam K: Ugh. Why is Firefox updating all the time?
Adam K: Everytime I open it: “Firefox has just downloaded an update. Do you want to install and restart now?”
Adam K: my coworker, a big macfreak, says “WHY DON’T YOU JUST USE SAFARI!?!?”
Meatloafing: new safari is fast and good or some shit
Adam K: I have, like, 26 tabs open! I don’t want to lose that info!
Adam K: It was particularly bad last week, ot so much lately. must have been a lot of security/bug patches
Meatloafing: yeah, it was like twice a day at least
Adam K: i’d agree. i have a couple plug-ins on FF that i really like–mostly Flickr extensions. AllSizes+ and InfiniteScroll or some such. something that lets you scroll and scroll thru pages.
Meatloafing: IT JUST HAPPENED AGAIN
Adam K: what’d you go as for halloween?
Meatloafing: nothing
Meatloafing: u?
Meatloafing: PIZZA???

bah. what a bunch of fan-boys you all are. I’ve been a mac guy since day one, but safari has always sucked. As a web developer I can tell you it’s the bane of my existence. Safari3 takes a shit and dies as soon as it opens the new site I’ve been working on - a site that many developers (besides me) have spent months making sure would work in all major browsers (including safari2). We’ve decided not to even bother coding for safari3 until they patch it a few times.
FF may update a lot, but that’s just because it’s gaining popularity and its developers are scrupulous about protecting your security (unlike our friends over at Micro$oft). If FF is slow is might have something to do w/ the 300 tabs you have open, or the 50 extensions you have installed. Extensions (or combinations of extensions) are notorious for causing memory leaks (a friend had a serious problem w/ Adblock Plus the other day, and I’m convinced that Firebug - as much as I love it - is causing problems on my machine).
I believe that a stripped down copy of Firefox will beat out safari every time: It will be at least as fast, and it won’t have any of the weird display issues that you get in safari.

How can anyone use a browser that doesn’t have good del.icio.us integration? Bookmarks are so 1994.

As a web developer, I have to agree with Nick. Safari is a major pain in the ass. The only thing I like about it is its beautiful rendering of resized images.

It seems as though all these nerds are correct. I just downloaded Safari 3 on my PC at work, and it’s truly blowing my mind. The image rendering! Wow. On Meatloafing, images unfortunately have to be resized because of (fixable) stage-width issues in WordPress. But I am not a developer so I don’t care too much about what Safari breaks, and for now I’ll still primarily use Firefox (at least at work), but I think eventually everyone should use Safari 3.

I been using Safari at work and my gmail gets stuck in it. I feel FF is kinda slow but overall safari is shit when it comes to webmails.
