Do You Like Comedy?
Tuesday, October 16th, 2007I love a good laugh (who doesn’t?) but am deathly afraid of improv. I mean, it’s usually uncomfortable, tense and confusing, which I think is probably the opposite of funny.
But when my good friends Lisa Whiteman and Todd Levin (who is a fantastic comedian and writer himself) invited me to see an improv show at UCB (that’s Upright Citizens Brigade to you and me), I couldn’t pass it up.
The improvers were actor Scott Adsit of 30 Rock and writer Tami Sagher, also of 30 Rock. They were so, so good! I kept asking if they rehearsed or had an outline or something but I was reminded that the point of improv was to, er, improvise. This was the first improv show that didn’t make me want to hide under my seat cringing. I even laughed out loud.
I never watched 30 Rock before but now I am a fan 4 life. I also learned that I will give improv another chance in the near future. But only if it’s done by trained professionals. Not by anyone’s work friends or anything like that.
